If you looked up the definition of this award, you would see a picture of this year’s award winner. Over his more than 20 years in the industry, this year’s award winner has far exceeded all of the criteria year after year.
Since joining the GA Chapter 21 years ago, the award winner immediately began contributing by assisting in the development and instruction of insurance fraud classes at the State police academy. This was the first time any classes of this type were included in law enforcement training in the state and it continues to this day. During his tenure in the Chapter, this award winner has held every position in Chapter leadership. He was instrumental in growing the Chapter in Georgia and improving attendance at monthly meetings as well as annual seminars. During his tenure as Chapter President, this award winner developed a partnership with LoJack for laptops which assisted police through the use of “bait” computers which led to the recovery of 45 stolen laptops and multiple arrests. He was also instrumental in partnering with NICB to erect fraud awareness billboards throughout metro-Atlanta and later provided his expertise in the matter to assist other states start similar projects.
After completing more than 6 years on the Chapter Board, this award winner was not yet done with his service to IASIU. From 2013-2016 this award winner served on the International Board and served as the Committee Chair for the International seminar for 3 of the years. He is largely credited during that time for strengthening the quality of the educational program and attendee experience. He also served as the Education Committee Chair and was instrumental in establishing the new (and free) Webinar program started at the International level. In this same role he was responsible for members being able to earn credits toward professional designations after attending webinars and through programs in the SIU magazine. He also started a resource library which will soon be rolling out.
While the above alone would itself be enough, keep in mind everything that was just mentioned was volunteer. This award winner also spent 21 years with his carrier in several SIU roles including Major Case and Special Projects. He is described among his work family as a consummate professional, having worked tirelessly and diligently on his investigations.
On other occasions, this award winner was very instrumental in providing training to the Major Case Unit and the Special Projects Unit. He provided invaluable training on how to properly take photographs while in the field. In every position the award winner held had he was able to leave a legacy for those who followed his footsteps by creating documents or simplifying processes.
One of award winner’s previous managers is credited for saying he always performed his investigations with the highest level of professionalism. During audit reviews Walter almost always received perfect scores and was known for working some of the more difficult investigations in assignment area. He worked closely with law enforcement, obtaining funding that provided them with undercover vehicles for the burglary task force, license plate readers and arranged for a pretext policy on a roofing investigation. He was instrumental in providing bait cars and bait laptops to local police departments. His work in these areas resulted in numerous arrest and convictions throughout the metro Atlanta area. As one previous manager stated about the award winner, “I can only speak from my experience, but in the 14 years as an SIU manager in Georgia, I don’t recall meeting anyone who had the dedication and drive for fighting insurance fraud that Walter displayed”.
As you can see from everything I have said, this award winner defines and sets the bar for Outstanding Service in IASIU and the industry. Because of that, starting today, the GA IASIU Outstanding Service Award will now be renamed in this award winner’s honor.
And so, it is only fitting, that the first recipient of the Walter Swett Outstanding Service Award is …..
Walter Swett (Nationwide)
